FRED AND JOSEPHINE (Kolbeck) GAUL AND THEIR FAMILY

FRED

Frederick Peter Gaul was born April 09, 1905 in Alton, Sioux County Iowa, to Peter and Katherin (nee Delperdange) Gaul.

Fred and his twin brother Nicholas were the youngest of fifteen children.

They had five sisters and eight brothers: Anna married Ernest Kern, Catherine married Michael Holles, Rose married Fred Croat, Margaret married Emil Hansen and Mary married John Vortherms. John J. remained single, John Peter married Sylivia Fischbach, After Sylivia’s death, John married Marie Arens Maher, Anton married Mary Bernard, Lambert married Theresa Steinkemper, Ferdinand married Anna Marx, Martin married Marie Reith, Nick married Antoinette Haupert and Fred married Josephine Kolbeck.

Joseph and Anthony died at an early age.

Fred died April 08, 1977, and is buried in ST. Mary’s Cemetery, Ashton, Osceola County, Iowa.

Fred’s Father Peter died November 18, 1927. His Mother Katherin died April 08, 1937. Both parents are buried in ST. Mary’s Cemetery, Alton, Sioux County, Iowa.

JOSEPHINE

Magdlen Josephine Kolbeck was born August 07, 1908 in Ashton, Osceola County, Iowa, to Johann Clems “Clem” and Susan (nee Wingen) Kolbeck. Josephine died at an early age of 36 years on July 10, 1945 and is buried in ST Mary’s Cemetery, Ashton, Iowa.

Josephine was the youngest of six children. She had four sisters and one brother: Elizabeth married William Seivert, Anna married Herman Hatting, Catherine married Dominic Weiler, Caroline married Lou Sievert, Josephine married Fred Gaul and Frank married Rose Seivert.

Clem lost his first wife Elizabeth Krogman on April 17, 1894. There were three children born to this marriage. Clem then married Susan Wingen and with this marriage three children were born.

After Clem lost his wife Elizabeth, he felt he needed a wife to help raise the children. A friend told him of a girl that lived near Salem, South Dakota who was 22 years of age and still single. So, with the help of the friend, Clem wrote to Susan and asks her to marry him. Susan agreed and it was arranged that Clem would buy the trousseau. He rode a horse and buggy from Ashton to Salem. They were married on November 14, 1895.

Clem was born on September 11, 1858 in Steinfeld, Germany, Province of Oldenburg. Elizabeth was born on November 01, 1868. The place of her birth is unknown. Susan was born on August 01, 1873 in Richfield, Wisconsin.

Clem died on December 01, 1940. Susan died on December 09, 1934. Both are buried in ST Mary’s Cemetery, Remsen, Plymouth County, Iowa. Elizabeth died at an early age of 25 years and is buried in ST Mary’s Cemetery, Ashton, Iowa.

FRED AND JOSEPHINE’S FAMILY

When Fred was a young man he played saxophone with a small group band. The band would play for weddings, holiday celebrations, etc. in towns around Northwest Iowa. At one of these events, while the band was playing, Fred saw an attractive young lady at the dance. He handed his sax to a fellow band member and said he had to dance with that young lady. The rest is history.

Fred and Josephine were married February 07, 1927 in Remsen, Iowa. From this marriage nine children were born, three girls and six boys.

Ardene Catherine Gaul

Ardene, the oldest of the nine children, was fourteen years of age when her mother, Josephine, passed away. This put great pressure on her as well as other members of the family.

Ardene married Marion Fredrick Hindt of Little Rock, Lyon County, Iowa. They have four children:

Mary Jo married Griff William Lavik from Settle, Washington.

Steve Allen married Lori Kathleen Kjos from Richfield, Minnesota. They have two children:

· Tracy Robert Hindt

Linda Ann married Kevin Frank Bottorff from Webster, Keokuk County, Iowa. They have two children:

Richard Douglas married Dorothy Delaney from Bloomington, Minnesota. They have two children:

Mick married Patricia Marie Wimmer of Ashton, Osceola County, Iowa.

They have four children:

Keith Wayne married Susan Ann Nordenstedt from San Francisco, California. They have one child:

Tom married LaVonne Bertha Paskert from LeMars, Plymouth County, Iowa. They have two children:

Pat married Bernard Lee Ruppert from Linsay, Platte County, Nebraska. They have seven children:

Susanne Agnus married Ronald Jeffery Veskma from Madison, Madison County, Nebraska. They had three children:

Tragedy struck this family in the year of 2003. Susanne and Ron lost two of their children, Sarah Kay and Wade Louis, in an auto accident.

Deborah Elizabeth married Dean Irvin Bove from Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska. One child was born to this marriage.

Tragedy also struck this family. Dean died at the age of 39 years.
